Joe was born in Galesburg, Illinois, a small town, west of Chicago but spent his formative years in New York City playing with and learning from many of the best musicians the scene had to offer. After moving to Barcelona in 2000, he released two albums as a leader featuring his own compositions. Happy (2001) and Melodic Workshop (2003) which features Bill McHenry, Gorka Benitez, Guillermo Klein, Chris Lightcap and Jorge Rossy. In 2008 he formed the Asociación Libre Orkesta, a free-form Big Band which performs improvised music inspired by his poetry and projected Images. Joe’s latest compositional project, build-i-n-g features Liz Kosack on synthesizers and piano and Andrew D’Angelo on Alto Saxophone. The first two albums Muladhara Rising and Feel Honey present Joe’s composition that mix rubato, forward-moving melodies and improvisations over pulse without meter grooves. (www.build-i-n-g.com) Joe Smith’s new Trio features Bill McHenry on Tenor Saxophone and Masa Kamaguchi on Double bass and explores his composition style in a more stylistic jazz setting.
Joe has also been a featured sideman on the recordings of John McNeil, Arthur Kell, Ryan Blotnick, Larry Porter, Johannes Haage and many others. He has toured extensively in Europe, the Americas, and the Scandinavian Countries.
In 2017 Joe published a book of short stories titled Nickels & Dimes and other stories and is currently writing a Novel. During the Pandemic, Joe teamed up with his father, Ron in creating an App called the Pyramid Ritual which presents rhythmic subdivisions over very slow tempos. The App will be released in 2023. He also teaches in-person and on-line in his studio in Berlin.

Die App wird 2023 veröffentlicht. Er unterrichtet auch persönlich und online in seinem Studio in Berlin.
